• Question:

My brother was just blessed with a child. We are trying to decide one of the following two names 'Saahir' or 'Shaayaan'? Are both these names Islamic?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question. Congratulations to the family on the new baby. May Allah bless him, protect him and make him the coolness of your eyes.

Linguistically looking at the name "Saahir", the translation can either be "magician" or "one who stays awake". The common usage of the word is for a magician. Therefore, it would be strongly advised to refrain from keeping the name "Saahir".

"Shaayaan" means "to be apparent, outstanding or intelligent". This is a name that is commonly kept and its meaning is not necessarily detestable. Hence, it would be appropriate to keep this name.

    And Allah knows best.
