Changing A Child's Name Given by the Imam
  • Question:

Can a mother change the name of her child (on the birth certificate) after the child was given a different name by the imam? Is this a sin? Will the mother be accountable or the child? Does Allah consider the child's name to be the one the imam gave or the birth certificate? Or must the imam rename the child again? (the child is an adult now)

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Changing a name is permissible in Islam provided the name one is choosing is a permissible name according to the all islamic guidelines.

In some cases where the name has an inappropriate meaning, it is necessary to change it to a name with an acceptable meaning.

It is not mandatory for an imam to name a child. Parents have the first right in naming the child. They may pass this right on to any reliable individual such as an imam of the community, an elder or relative.

    And Allah knows best.
