Dress Code for Prayers
  • Question:

Is there any dress code to follow for offering prayers? I have heard that men should have five and women 7 pieces of cloth. If it is true then why don’t we follow it during Hajj and Umrah?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

During prayer the awrah (nudeness) of the body must be covered with loose clothing regardless of any number of garment pieces. There is no such condition of having multiple pieces to cover appropriately.

The awrah (nudeness) for females is the entire body with the exception of the face, hands and feet, while the awrah for males is from navel to the knee.

These areas of the body must be covered when in public, also during Hajj and Umrah. As stated above, there is no requirement of multiple pieces of clothing if the awrah is covered with loose garments.

    And Allah knows best.
