Zakat - On Empty Plot and Rent Income
  • Question:

I have question regarding Zakat. I have a plot bought four years back to construct my house, it is still not constructed, do I have to pay zakat for this plot? I bought one plot for investment purpose long back do I have to pay zakat? If so then how to calculate. I have bought an apartment to rent, it is already rented do I have to pay zakat on the rent I am getting?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

One is liable to pay zakat for lands that have been purchased to build upon and also for investment. One will give 2.5 % of the market value in zakat for such lands.

Zakat is not obligated upon a property or apartment one owns which has been rented out to tenants. Rather, Zakat will be payable on the rental income of such a property.

    And Allah knows best.
