Prayer of Gratitude
  • Question:

What is the procedure to perform Nimaz Shukrana (prayer of gratitude)?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Imam Hakim has narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) instructed Ka’ab bin Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) to offer two rakaahs or two sujoods in gratitude to Allah.

It is also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) performed two rakaahs when the news related to the enemy of Islam Abu Jahl’s passing was given to him, in thanks to Allah. (Ibn Majah)

Some reports also indicate that a number of rakaahs were performed by the Messenger (peace and blessings upon him) at the occasion of the victory of Maccah.

Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (may Allah have mercy on him) states it is permissible to offer two raka’ahs nafl (optional) prayer as gratitude to Allah for any blessing.

    And Allah knows best.
