Sacrifice on Eid ul Adha - By Household or By Individual
  • Question:

My wife and I both have our own income. Normally we do one sacrifice (Qurbani) on Eid ul Adha which is either goat or sheep, with the intention that this is from both of us. Do we need to do separate Qurbani of 2 goat or sheep, one from me and one from my wife?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Sacrifice of an animal at the occasion of ‘Id al Adha is required and emphasised on each individual who owns Zakāh nisāb (the amount of money that necessitates Zakah).

In your specific case, it seems that both of you earn and have sufficient funds. Hence, the sacrificial animals for ‘Id al Adha must be rendered by each of you on an individual basis.

“Whoever has the [financial] capacity [to offer the sacrifice] and does not offer the sacrifice, he should not come near our place of prayer.” (Ibn Mājah)

    And Allah knows best.
