Marriage - A Good Spouse for One Who Was Previously Sinful
  • Question:

As we all know from the Qurʾānic verse Sūrah Nūr that good men are for good women and bad men are for bad ones. My question is can bad men/women turn into good ones? If they have committed too many sins in the past but now have repented, can they get a good/pious partner? As the signs of some sins always remain, what to do with them?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Yes, it is certainly possible for the Creator, Almighty Allāh to decree a good partner for the one who has repented from their previous life of sin.

“The one who repents is like the one who has not sinned.” (Ibn Mājah)

There are various interpretations rendered by the mufassirūn (scholars of Qur’ānic exegesis) regarding verse 24:26. Muftī Shafi’ (may Allāh’s mercy be with him) writes,

“In this verse the common principle is stated that Allāh has created a connection between the people of the same nature. Thus, vulgar and unchaste women are inclined towards vulgar and unchaste men and vice versa. Similarly, pure and chaste women show inclination towards pure and decent men and vice versa. Therefore, everyone tries to find the spouse according to one's inclination and liking, and in a natural way one does find one to suit him or her.” (See: Ma’ārif al Qur’ān)
Thus, when one has repented, they will incline towards pure, pious and righteous partners.

In regards to repenting from sin and signs of the sin, it is advised to abandon every possible aspect and association to the sin. One is obviously not obliged to do this regarding those signs that are impossible to eliminate such as a stab wound mark from a past violent gang altercation or a child in result of unlawful intercourse.
We pray for the goodness of one and all.

    And Allah knows best.
