Family Expenditures - Does the Husband Bear the Sole Responsibility?
  • Question:

Please what is the provision or ruling of Islam as regards provisioning and maintenance of the family in a situation where the wife earns substantial or more income than the husband. Is the husband responsible for all expenditures even if the wife decides to keep her earnings to herself?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

The husband is obliged to provide for his wife and children. This is known as nafaqa.

Nafaqah includes basic necessities of food, shelter, clothing and medicine.

“Lodge them where you dwell, according to your means”. (Qur’ān 65: 6)

The wife's earnings and wealth is exclusively her property. She is not obliged to pay for any of the basic necessities. However, out of her kindness if she does, that is great.

    And Allah knows best.
