Meaning of the Names 'Hannah' and 'Hafsah'
  • Question:

My friend is having a baby girl in a few weeks insha Allah and they were thinking about different names. I was hoping you could clarify the names/meanings for the following:

    • The mother of Maryam (as). What is the Arabic spelling for the name, and the meaning?
    • Hafsah, the meaning and Arabic spelling?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question. Masha Allah, congratulations on the anticipated arrival of the new born. May Allah bless with happiness and success.

    • The mother of Maryam was Hannah (See Safwat Al Tafaaseer). The Arabic spelling for the name is حنة and the meaning of Hannah is ‘gift or gentle’

    • The meaning of Hafsah is ‘mercy or pleasant’ and is spelled حفصة in Arabic. (See Lisaan Al Arab)

    And Allah knows best.
