Mahr - Can the Marriage Contract Be Amended?
  • Question:

I just want to know if the mahr stated on the marriage contract can be amended after the marriage took place? What the wife can do if the husband does not fulfil his obligation in marriage life same like if it is stated in the mahr that he has to read and teach his wife the Quran?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Mahr (bridal gift given by husband to wife) must be stipulated at the time of Nikah. The wife has the right of mahr. Once decided it cannot be amended unless the husband agrees.

If the husband is not fulfilling his obligations, he should be reminded of his duties. You may wish to involve family elders and or community leaders if matters are getting too difficult in your marriage situation. Counselling and family therapy are vital in repairing marital problems.

“And give the women [upon marriage] their [bridal] gifts graciously.” (Quran: 4:4)

"And if you fear a separation between the two of them, appoint an arbitrator from his family and an arbitrator from her family. If they desire reconciliation, Allah will bring them into agreement. Verily Allah is Knowing, Knowledgeable." (Quran 4:35)

    We pray for your success.

    And Allah knows best.
