  • Question:

If a girls family is non Muslim (Hindu) but she follows Islam secretly. Then if her family is asking her to marry non Muslim (Hindu) person, then can she marry him or stay not married forever because she cant disclose that she follows Islam due to harsh and orthodox society? Does she never marry?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

The situation described indeed is a difficult one. We pray for relief, guidance and facilitation.

Islamically, it is prohibited for a Muslim woman to marry a non Muslim. Refer to Qur’anic verse 2:221.

No one can force a marriage or religion on another. If the situation is really bad, and the person’s health or safety is at risk, one should contact their local authorities and agencies. One should never suffer in silence.

It is encouraged to get married. I am sure if the revert sister displays proper Islamic etiquette in communicating and living with non muslim family members, they will understand the circumstance. Initially, one may want to keep their choice of islam secret but over time, Islam must be professed and made known to others. Good character and a decent approach along with ongoing dialogue and communication will In-sha Allah bring relief.

The person in question may also want to seek help from their local imam, respected elders and community recourses.

    We pray for success.
