Bathing (Ghusl) the Husband for the Funeral Service
  • Question:

My husband passed away, can I perform his ghusl prior to the funeral and burial?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. "To Allah we belong and to Him shall we return".

We express our condolences to you on the passing of your husband. May Allah bless him with forgiveness and high ranks in paradise.

In response to your query, please note that it is permissible for you to participate in the ghusl (bathing) of your husband in preparation of the funeral service.

Imam Al Zurqaani has stated, "There is no difference of opinion regarding the permissibility of a wife bathing her husband (during janaza preparation)."

It is also reported from Abdullah ibn Abu Bakr (ra) that Asmaa bint Umais (ra), the wife of Abu Bakr (ra) bathed Abu Bakr (ra) when he passed away. (Muwatta Imam Malik)

    And Allah knows best.
