Names for Children
  • Question:

We have chosen the name for my son as "Ameerul-mumineen". Is it permissible to use that name? I consult with some of the ulamaas for the naming convention. They told me that this name is not suitable for the kids as this name belongs to khalifa rashideen alone.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question. May Allāh bless your children and family.

When naming children, Islam encourages names that have good meanings and those that entail modesty.

As far as ‘amīr al muminīn’ is concerned, this is not a name, it is rather a title. The meaning is ‘leader of the believers’. In principle, it would be permissible to keep this tittle as a name, but it is not the best thing to do.

We suggest you select another suitable name.

“Keep good names for your selves” (Abū Dawūd, Musnad Aḥmad)

    And Allah knows best.
