Nikah - Across the Miles
  • Question:

My fiancé and I live in different countries. Due to immigration issues, we are not able to be together immediately. Is it possible for us to be married while in different countries, so that we can continue to communicate with each other in a halal manner?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

May Allāh bless your future marriage with bliss and happiness.

Islamically, it is permissible to conduct a proxy marriage. In such a marriage service, the wife-to be appoints a representative who represents her at the official ceremony. This representative will be in the presence of witnesses and the husband to be, when the marriage is officiated by the imam or elder. This is a valid Islamic marriage. Please consult your local imams to facilitate this process.

    And Allah knows best.
