Serving Parents with Good Deeds and Prayers
  • Question:

I live in another country, away from elderly parents and my siblings. I really want to serve them and shower them with kindness but I am unable to travel frequently. What deeds can I do, what kind of prayers can I offer so that the reward goes to my parents and family?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Your concern to serve elderly parents and siblings is admirable.

Some of the things you could do if you are at a distance from them, and wish to serve them:

    • Stay in frequent contact with them through phone, email, skype etc.
    • Send them letters and gifts
    • Pay for some or all of their expenses
    • Arrange for someone who lives near them to connect with them on your behalf and look after them.
    • Make general du’ās (supplication) to Allāh for their well-being.
    • Constantly say the Qur’ānic supplication for them: “My Lord, be merciful to them as they have brought me up in my childhood” (Qur’ān 17:24)

    And Allah knows best.
