Qibla - How Do I Pray in a Place without the Qibla Direction?
  • Question:

How do I pray in a place where I am unable to determine the Qibla direction?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

May Allāh bless you for your concern regarding prayer.

When one is unable to determine the direction of qiblā, they are obliged to conduct taḥarrīy (explore and enquire) before commencing prayer. One should investigate and screen the area. One can also use reason and look at the position of the sun etc. to help define the direction for the prayer. In today’s time, there are many technological tools, even on smart phones to help in this process.

One should perform the prayer after conducting the taḥarrīy.
There is no need to repeat the prayer, if one comes to know that the prayer was performed in the incorrect direction, provided taḥarrīy was conducted. (See: Mukhtaṣar al Qudūrī)

“Turn your face in the direction of the Sacred Mosque (Al-Masjid-ul-Harām in Mecca), and (O Muslims), wherever you are, turn your faces in its direction.” (Qur’ān 2:144)

    And Allah knows best.
