Zakat - Can it be Given to Dependents?
  • Question:

Can zakāh be given to dependants? Does the act of feeding one’s children and wife count as giving zakāh?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

The act of feeding one’s children and wife is blessed, charitable and rewarding.

“The most superior wealth [in rewards and blessings] is the wealth one spends upon one's family.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

Zakāh is an Islamic obligation upon those who have the niṣāb (required amount which obligates the mandatory charity). This is not fulfilled by spending on one’s children and wife. (See: Mukhtaṣar al Qudūrī)

    And Allah knows best.
