Prayers - Missed Mandatory Prayers and Details
  • Question:

Could you advise on the Qadhā al ‘Omrī (missed) prayers, and any relevant details?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

“Whoever forgets to pray should pray as soon as they remember, for there is no expiation for the prayer besides performing it.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

If one has missed some mandatory ritual prayers (ṣalāh), they are required to make them up.

It is important to note that it is essential to specify each missed prayer when making them up. For example one should say ‘I intend to perform the noon prayer (dhuhr) of the 12th January 2014’. If however one wishes to simplify the matter, then they may specify the first dhuhr prayer due on them or the last dhuhr due on them.” (See Nūr al Iḍāh)

Also worthy to note on this topic is that once the timing of a ṣalāh has expired, one is only obliged to make up for fardh prayers, not the attached sunnah or optional prayers.

    And Allah knows best.
