Marriage - To a Cousin - Is it Permitted?
  • Question:

I have a serious question regarding marrying my mother’s sister’s daughter. Is that accepted in islam? My mom wants me to marry her sister’s daughter but I heard people saying that is not accepted in Islam. Can you please advise me on this? I am confused!

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

In Islam, it is permissible to marry one’s cousin (maternal aunt’s daughter).

The Prophet Muḥammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself, married his first cousin, Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allāh be pleased with her). She was the daughter of the Prophet’s paternal aunt Umaymah.

Please also refer to the Qur’ānic verses 4:22 to 4:24 which list the categories of prohibited women for marriage. One’s cousin is not listed there.

    And Allah knows best.
