Zakat - Is It Payable on the Same Wealth Every Year?
  • Question:

Is Zakat payable on the same wealth every year?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Zakat is payable on the same wealth every year provided the total amount in ownership reaches the niṣāb (amount that makes Zakat obligatory).

Here below are some of the foundational conditions for Zakat:

Zakat must be paid by every person who is:

    • A Muslim
    • Mature
    • Sane
    • The complete owner and possessor of such wealth that is:

    1. In excess of basic needs and necessities
    2. Beyond the minimum amount required for one to be eligible to pay Zakat (niṣāb)
    3. Free from such debt that is equal or more than the amount of wealth currently in the owner’s possession.
    4. Productive, whether:

    • intrinsically, such as gold and silver
    • in actuality, such as breeding or accumulating profits

“And establish prayer and give Zakat and obey the Messenger – that you may receive mercy”. (Qur’ān 24:56)

“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allāh is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allāh multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (Qur’ān 2:261)

    And Allah knows best.
