Hair Removal in Men
  • Question:

What hair should be shaved off? I understand that men should shave armpit hair. What about below the navel? Can you please elaborate what should be removed and what can be left?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Prophetic teachings of cleanliness and purification instruct the believer to remove pubic hair. The hair that is to be removed, at least every forty days, if not earlier, is the hair of the armpit and the hair around the genitals. This refers to the hair below the pelvis bone between the two hip bones and also around the anus. Pubic hair is usually the distinct hair that if left, grows thick underneath the armpits and around the genitals. (See Al Baḥr Al Rāiq)

Anas (may Allāh be pleased with him) said, "We have been instructed [by the Messenger peace and blessings upon him] regarding the time frame of trimming the mustache, clipping nails, plucking the armpits and shaving the pubic hair of genitals. We are not to leave them for more than forty nights" (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

    And Allah knows best.
