Repaying Debts
  • Question:

What should I do for debts with a person whose contacts I have lost? What should I do for debts when the debtor is already dead?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

If you tried finding the one you owed the money to and could not, then you should give the money away in charity with the intention that the reward will be for that person. If you find him after that, then you tell him you gave the amount in charity. If he is pleased, then no further action is necessary. Otherwise, pay him the money that you owe and the charity will be for you.

As for the deceased debtor, then you should give the money to his heirs according to the Islamic equation of inheritance. If you are in a Muslim country, then you can allow the judge to divide it up.

    And Allah knows best.
