Raising Hands in Salah
  • Question:

There is much confusion regarding Rafadhain or raising hands in Salah. Please clarify if it is necessary or not for both male & female as hadith show it was done by Rasoolullah SAW.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

Imam Al Bukhari wrote a book “juz rafaal yadayn” in which he included over 170 ahadeeth to prove the legitimacy of this practice. There is much evidence that it was indeed the practice of the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) and this is the view I follow and believe to be sunnah for both men and women. With that being said, it is a matter of disagreement amongst the great scholars of Islam and even amongst the earliest Muslims. Therefore, if one follows a school of thought or scholar who, based on his evidence, doesn’t see it as legislated, then they may follow that. As for me, I uphold the opinion of those that say that it is from the Sunnah to do so. I should point out though that no one believes this practice is mandatory or forbidden, it is a matter of what is closest to the Sunnah.

    And Allah knows best.
