Devils during Ramadan
  • Question:

It is said that during the month of Ramadan, the Shayateen (devils) are chained. What is it then that causes the evil whisperings that many of us still experience during Ramadan?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

There is a difference of opinion amongst the scholars of hadith regarding the Shayateen (devils) being chained during Ramadan.

According to some hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) has referred to only the 'rebellious' Shayateen being chained. Hence the smaller devils are still present to distract us during the holy month.

Those scholars who are of the opinion that all the Shayateen are chained explain; the evil that we engage in during Ramadan is from ourselves not inspired by Shayateen. It’s sort of like a car traveling at high speed on a highway (motorway) and all of a sudden 'brakes' to stop. We all know the car does not stop at the location where the 'brake' was applied, rather the car drags for a distance before coming to a complete stop.

This is why we need to try our best to make efforts to always be righteous (avoiding the whispers of the Shayateen) whether Ramadan or not.

    And Allah knows best.
