Cleaning with Toilet Paper after Using the Toilet
  • Question:

Are we permitted to use sheets of paper after using toilets in the western world. Also, can we urinate standing up – even though we may wash using water at the end of it?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

The Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said:

“When you go to the restroom, take three stones with you to clean yourself. That will suffice.” (Abu Dawud)

Therefore using toilet paper is like using stones in that you use something with a dry surface to physically remove the impurity.

As for standing up while urinating, the ahadith which condemn the practice are all inauthentic. However, Ayesha (RA) said that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) never used to urinate except while squatting. A report from Hudhayfa and Ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with them, indicates that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) did in fact do that on one occasion, but that doesn’t establish it as a habit. Standing causes more splashing as well as uncleanliness for the one who comes after. Therefore, the Muslim should always sit when possible. However, if you are in an inherently unclean place where it is actually better for your purity to stand, then you may do so.

    And Allah knows best.
