Permissibility to Eat Shrimp/Prawn/Lobsters
  • Question:

Are we allowed to eat shrimps, prawns, lobsters, and other non-fish animals from the sea under the Hanafi school of jurisprudence? Do they not classify as seafood?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

The traditional view of the Hanafi school is that only fish can be eaten and everything else is severely disliked. However, that is not a matter of consensus in the school and some of the great Hanafi scholars of our age like Mufti Taqi Usmani allow it. Moreover, it is considered a weaker opinion and the other schools all approve of eating all sea animals based on the hadith found in Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Muwatta, and others in which the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said that the seawater is pure and its dead animals are pure as well.

    And Allah knows best.
