Prayer - In Room Sharing with A Non-Muslim
  • Question:

My roommate has different belief and is displaying her statues or goddess symbol, Virgin Mary to be particular, in her bedside and we are sharing same room. In my simple understanding, as long as I am praying to Allah alone my prayer would be valid Insha'Allah. Would it be so?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

May Allah guide your roommate to the truth and make you the means of her guidance. Your prayer would be valid in a room with no statues or pictures. However, you should ask your roommate to remove those symbols as the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wa salam) said the angels do not enter a home with pictures, statues, etc. or dogs. If she does not do so, you should seek another accommodation. If that is not possible, then fear Allah as much as you can and pray in the part of the house most conducive to worship.

    And Allah knows best.
