Prayers for Necessity and Repentance
  • Question:
Is there such thing as salah for need and salah for repentance? Did the Prophet ever do or encourage this?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question. May Allah bless you greatly for your interest in religious matters. May He bless us all with the ability to follow that which was demonstrated to us by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The following narrations, amongst others, point out the Prophetic example regarding the Salat Al Hajah (prayer for necessity) and Salat Al Taubah (prayer for repentance):

Hudhaifah (r) reports the “Whenever a matter (of concern) would befall the Messenger of Allah, he would perform salah”. (Musnad Ahmed, Abu Dawood)

Abu Bakr (r) narrated, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saying, “Any man who commits a sin, thereafter stands and washes (performs ablution), following which he performs salah, then seeks forgiveness from Allah, Almighty Allah forgives him”.

The Prophet (pbuh) then recited this verse (Holy Quran 3:135) “And those who, when they happen to commit a shameful act or wrong themselves, remember Allah, then, seek forgiveness for their sins-and who is there to forgive sins except Allah?-and do not persist in what they have done, knowingly” (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood, Nasai, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, Baihaqi)

    And Allah knows best.
