Prayers while Seated in Car
  • Question:

If I am in a car travelling and it is time for Zuhr salat. The car continues to move without stopping. How do I performed salat in that situation, knowing very well that there is no excuse for missing salat, except when you are crazy or cannot remember anything.

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for your concern regarding prayer.

While travelling in a car, if it is the time for obligatory prayer, one should have the car stopped. One should get off and pray on ground facing the direction of qiblah.

If one is offering nafl (optional) prayers, then it is permitted to perform them while seated in the vehicle, even though the direction may not be that of the qiblah.

“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) offered his prayers upon his conveyance (transportation) in which ever direction the (conveyance animal) was facing. When he intended to perform the Fardh (obligatory) prayer, he would climb down and face the qiblah.” (Bukhari)

If it is absolutely impossible to get off the vehicle to pray fardh prayers on the ground, then only would it be permissible to perform salah in the vehicle while seated. In such a circumstance, one is required to repeat the prayer, to make up for the mandatory act of standing, which was not fulfilled.

    And Allah knows best.
