How Often Shall We Have Intercourse?
  • Question:

How often are husband and wife allowed to have intercourse in a week? Are we allowed to see each other nude or take a bath together or massage each other?

Assalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

    Thank you for your question.

A husband and wife may enjoy intercourse as per their needs, as often as they wish. Each partner should be considerate of the other in terms of needs, health and timings. Mutual understanding and moderation is key in a healthy marital relationship.

It should be noted that it is prohibited to have intercourse when the wife is experiencing menses. It is also prohibited to have intercourse via the anus.

“They ask you about menstruation. Say it is an impurity. So, keep away from women during menstruation; and do not have intimacy with them until they are cleansed. But when they are cleansed, then go to them from where Allah has commanded you. Surely Allah loves those who are most repenting, and loves those who keep themselves pure. (Qur'an 2:222)

"Do not approach women in their anus (for fulfilling your carnal desires)". (Tirmidhi)

Regarding your other concern, know that it is permissible for a husband and wife to see each other’s private parts for pleasure or any other reason such as a massage or shower. There is no objection in this.

The only relationship where sexual intimacy is allowed is the relationship of husband and wife. When intercourse is permissible, then surely it is permissible for a married couple to enjoy each other by fondling, touching or seeing each other.

Saʿd ibn Masud al-Kandi reported, Uthman ibn Mazun (r) came to Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) and said, ‘Messenger of Allah (pbuh), I feel embarrassed when my wife looks at my private parts (ʿawrah).’ The Messenger (pbuh) said, ‘Allah has made you a garment for them and made them a garment for you.’” (Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzaq)

Even though this is permissible, the Prophet (pbuh) preferred to avoid glancing or seeing the private organs of his spouse. (See Tirmidhi)

    And Allah knows best.
