Meet HOTD Imams

We're pleased to have Shaykh Yusuf Badat and Shaykh Omar Suleiman as the Hadith of the Day Imams who will be answering questions from our audience.



SHAYKH OMAR SULEIMAN

Shaykh Omar Suleiman is the kind-hearted, friendly giant from New Orleans, Louisiana. Born and raised in America, Shaykh Omar has a unique way of relating to a western audience though his character has gained the love of people of all ages and backgrounds.

His journey of seeking knowledge started in 2000 in the United Arab Emirates where he spent a few years at the feet of prestigious scholars such as Shaykh Tariq Ibn Rajah and Amr Al Sheshany. Since then he has sought knowledge and studied under Shaykh Salah As Sawy, Dr Hatem Al Haj, his father in law Shaykh Abul Abed, and Al Allamah Shaykh Omar Al Ashqar (rahimahullah).

His specialties include Tafseer, History, Islamic Finance, Minority Fiqh, Maqasid, and Tazkiyah.

Shaykh Omar has two Bachelors degrees in Islamic Studies and in accounting, a Masters degree in Islamic Finance, and is currently pursuing a Phd in Islamic History from the Islamic University of Malaysia.

He previously served as Imam for Masjid Abu Bakr As-Siddique in New Orleans for 6 years and has since dedicated himself to fulltime teaching. He has taught with Mishkah University (formerly Sharia Academy) since 2008 under Shaykh Salah As Sawy and also currently serves as the director of the Islamic Learning Foundation in Texas.

Shaykh Omar also is a strong advocate of community service, interfaith dialogue, and social justice. He served as the field coordinator of ICNA Relief in Hurricane Katrina and also co founded the east Jefferson clergy interfaith council. In 2010, the Mayor and City Council of New Orleans awarded him for "Outstanding Civic Achievement". He is a current member of the ICNA Shariah Council.



SHAYKH YUSUF BADAT

Shaykh Yusuf Badat is the main Imam and 'Director of Religious Affairs' at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto. Shaykh Yusuf Badat also serves as a teacher for Arabic, Islamic Studies, Quranic Studies and World Religions at the Islamic Foundation School.

Shaykh Yusuf Badat has served as Imam since 1999 at Masjid Anwarul Islam of Malton (Masjid Saliheen) in Mississauga, Canada. He has also been an instructor at the Toronto Shariah Program and the Uloom Program. Shaykh Yusuf Badat is the founder and director of Mathabah Foundation. He is an active executive member of the Canadian Council of Muslim Theologians CCMT.

He lives in Toronto with his wife and two children. Shaykh Yusuf Badat was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He has studied under some great scholars, receiving several formal authorizations in the sacred sciences with top honors. His commitment to the sacred sciences began early in his life when Allah blessed him with the ability, by age 14, to complete the memorization of the Holy Quran. He completed a rigorous 6-year Alim course at Darul Uloom Zakariya, South Africa where he achieved his masters in the Islamic sciences, which included but was not limited to, language, exegesis (tafseer) and jurisprudence (fiqh).

He earned authorizations in Hadith under the Grand Mufti of South Africa- Shaykh Radha-ul-Haq. Shaykh Yusuf Badat is an Ontario registered minister of religion & licensed marriage officer. He also holds a diploma in Network Administration from the Toronto School of Business.
